I was shaken up today. Most days I don’t think about the fact I almost died. It’s not like I pretend it didn’t happen, but in order to live my life the way I want, with passion and zest, I choose not to dwell on it.
Yet, when my blood pressure was 140/90 today, I suddenly started thinking about it. One reading doesn’t indicate a problem, but I’ve had a few high ones lately. And I speak about the dangers of uncontrolled blood pressure all the time. But…
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?? Is something wrong with my heart?
For someone who feels pretty darn healthy most of I really don’t like contemplating something going wrong again.
I took the bull by the horns though. I contacted my primary care doctor and we had a long discussion about what effect my traveling may have on my blood pressure. Certainly the challenges of getting exercise and controlling my salt intake could have something to do with the increase. An automatic blood pressure cuff will now be a part of the equipment in my carry-on and I’ll watch the salt more closely. After taking my ‘water pill’ my blood pressure was back to normal – whew!
I feel better knowing I can take charge of the situation.
Now, however, the thing really bothering me is this. My blood pressure was taken as part of an appointment to take care of a rash on my foot. Even though the nurse and I discussed the reading and she checked my history and saw it and the one before it were unusually high, the doctor never said anything about it. A big swing in blood pressure should have been discussed (especially with someone with my history.) Oh, there is still work to be done. Yep, I’m on it!
Don’t assume your blood pressure is okay just because your doctor doesn’t mention it – ask! Grab the bull by the horns and take charge – you can do it!
